Spey Casting 101
So many times we have heard people say…
"I'd like to try that sometime."
The RFS "Spey 101" School is perfect for an angler who would like to
learn Spey casting and experiment with Switch rods too. A Switch rod
is hybrid that can be cast overhead (traditional one handed cast), or it can
be used as a Spey rod. This new rod style is taking the fly fishing
world by storm! You will also learn to cast your 5 weight trout rod
using Single Hand Spey techniques to enhance your trout fishing!
Topics include

Start with the basics: how a spey rod loads the line, the importance of an
“anchor,” how to form a successful “D Loop” and the 180-degree principal

Understand the importance of stance, rod grip, and the all-important casting
stroke

Observe a demonstration of the two anchor groups used in spey casting:
water-born and air-born anchors.

Next learn the different kinds of fly lines used in spey casting and when to
use each

Begin by learning the 2-handed roll cast and the essential “positive stop”
to generate aerialized, tight loops

See how learning spey casts can give you the advantage when fishing for
trout

Finally, learn the essential forward spey or switch cast – the fundamental
spey cast on which all other spey casts are built.
With this knowledge and basic skills in hand, you’re now ready to learn your
essential fishing casts taught in our next cours, Spey 201.
