To anglers across the globe, steelhead are a highly prized quarry. Not only are the fish themselves beautiful, especially the fresh ones that have an almost translucent color to them that no photo or painting could ever quite capture accurately, but they live in some of the most scenic places in the world. The Skeena River and its' many tributaries remain one of the best places in the world to pursue wild steelhead with a 2 handed rod and swung fly. Some of these tributaries are extremely remote and not only require complicated logistics to get to, but are also very expensive. We have developed a gem of a program that caters to the Do It Yourself angler in terms of budget and flexibility. Whether this would be your first time fishing BC or you already know your way around, this is a quality program that you are going to find great value and convenience in!
This itinerary begins with a leisurely Sunday afternoon arrival into Terrace, BC. A rental truck awaits the group in the parking lot, and the lodge is only 5 minutes down the road! After settling into our spacious accommodations for the week, we will drive to the local supermarket to pick up breakfast and lunch provisions for the week, then visit one of the many Terrace restaurants for dinner before returning to the lodge to get gear unpacked and organized for an early departure the next morning.
An experienced local licensed guide will join us for coffee the next morning and collect half of the group to join him for the day on whichever river he decides offers the best opportunity to swing a fly past the nose an aggressive fish. The rest of the group will load up in the truck with watermasters aboard, and go search the waters of the Copper or lower Skeena for that glassy tailout or smooth riffle that might hold one of the trophy steelhead this region is famous for. We'll all meet up to recap each anglers day while we enjoy burgers and a frosty mug of Molson. The anglers will switch between guided and DIY each day of the week to take full advantage of local expertise and the ever changing conditions steelhead anglers may encounter!
The lodge we use is ideally equipped to handle a group of 6 anglers. Two bedrooms downstairs and one upstairs are each set up with 2 double beds. The furniture is comfortable and a modern kitchen make the limited food preparation we'll do here easy to conduct and clean up. A large deck offers a perfect spot to step in and out of waders each day, and a convenient rack just inside the door ensures ample drying time each night. We have a printer installed to remain as flexible as possible in purchasing our daily classified waters fishing licenses the night before or even early the morning of fishing based on real time conditions and reports. The only thing we need to be mindful of is keeping the bears out of the garbage cans at night!
SHOULD I GO?
Red's Fly Shop is really good at helping new anglers get into fly fishing, or helping experienced anglers advance their skills to the next level. That being said, our success is measured in anglers having positive experiences. We feel this trip offers a great opportunity to catch some world class fish and see a unique and amazing place for a great value. Our staff is here to help you plan every step to ensure success - so the real question becomes "Why wouldn't you go?"!!!
