This lodge is ideally located on an island in the heart of the best Rainbow water on the Kvichak River (pronounced Kwee-jack). This is the main river that flows out of Lake Iliamna. By mid August, the huge Rainbows are migrating out of the lake in quantity to eat eggs and flesh of the spawning Sockeye salmon. This is one of just a few prime weeks to experience this amazing phenomenon. In addition to the big Alaskan Rainbows, anglers will also catch fresh Silver salmon and Grayling.
The lodge offers a warm bed and full kitchen for your group to eat and rest between fishing sessions. While there is great fishing right along shoreline of the island, anglers have access to 5 aluminum boats to run up and down the river each day and find your own water. A host stays at the lodge to lend assistance as necessary.
The fishing on the Kvichak can be exceptional and 20 fish days are not uncommon. There are enough fish in the river that you can target them "on your terms", which means swinging flies on trout spey rods for many anglers, and drifting beads under bobbers for others. The 16' skiffs are easy to row and the 20 HP Honda motors provide plenty of power to explore miles of the river in search of spey water or run back to the top of the drift for another pass with bobbers.
The prime weeks o the Kvichak run August 15 through the first part of September. These slots are hard to come by, so once you get one you hate to give it up! This really is an easy place to please everyone - whether it takes getting a 25"+ Rainbow on the swing or an uncountable number of Grayling fishing dry flies.
