This lodge is ideally located on an island in the heart of the best Rainbow water on the Kvichak River (pronounced Kwee-jack). This is the main river that flows out of Lake Iliamna. By mid August, the huge Rainbows are migrating out of the lake to eat eggs and flesh of the spawning Chum, followed by Sockeye salmon. These are the prime weeks to experience this amazing phenomenon. In addition to the big Alaskan Rainbows, anglers may also catch fresh Silver salmon (best in late August), Pike, and Grayling.
The lodge offers a warm bed and full kitchen for your group to eat and rest between fishing sessions. While there is great fishing right along shoreline of the island, anglers have access to 5 aluminum boats to run up and down the river each day and find your own water. Longtime guide and hardcore angler Dave Dana is the full time camp manager. He picks up and drops off at the airport, orients anglers to camp and the DIY program. Dave is the full time lodge manager at SOF and spends the entire season there. Red's Fly Shop manager, Bob Miller, is hosting the week of August 19-25. Bob has guided and fished the Kvichak area extensively. He is skilled in both spey fishing and the egg drop techniques that are productive during this time of the season. For this week he will coordinate food and logistics, as well as the weekly itinerary to ensure all guests have an enjoyable week. This is THE prime week to encounter big Rainbows following the spawning Chum, and chrome bright Silvers, along with a great learning opportunity to spend a week in camp with Bob!
The fishing on the Kvichak can be exceptional and 20 fish days are not uncommon. There are enough fish in the river that you can target them "on your terms", which means swinging flies on trout spey rods for many anglers, and drifting beads under bobbers for others. The 16' skiffs are set up to row (or steer with oars if the wind kicks up) and the 20 HP Honda motors provide plenty of power to explore miles of the river in search of spey water or run back to the top of the drift for another pass with bobbers.
The prime weeks o the Kvichak run mid August through mid September. These slots are hard to come by, so once you get one you hate to give it up! This is an easy place to please everyone - whether it takes getting a 25"+ Rainbow on the swing or an uncountable number of Grayling fishing dry flies.
